PHILIP TREACY’S HATS
By Elizabeth Patterson

If you mention headwear in the fashion industry, the first name that jumps to mind is milliner master Philip Treacy. His creations have graced the heads of royalty as well as celebrities like Lady Gaga and Sarah Jessica Parker. Now, he’s releasing a book, chronicling his ascent and highlighting some of the finer points of his career.

Treacy’s hats have been in demand for fashion brands as well, and he has collaborated with Valentino, Givenchy, Chanel and Alexander McQueen. After years of climbing up the ranks, he is now the go-to hat designer for creating an inimitable piece to compliment every outfit, on the runway or off.

Treacy is not only known for his hats, but also for his famous friends. A notable friend was the late Isabella Blow, who helped launch Treacy’s career and who was a famous wearer of his daring creations. Her friendship and advocacy, along with their shared relationship with Alexander McQueen, helped cement Treacy as one to watch in the early years of the 90s, and established him as he moved onto bigger things over the years.

The book will feature more than a hundred photos, in color and black and white, of Treacy’s hats. His creations have been photographed by Irving Penn, Helmut Newton and Richard Avedon, to name a few, and on the heads of Christy Turlington and Naomi Campbell. Anecdotes from Treacy are also promised, from his first memories of working with these hallowed names to fun times with friends like Blow and others.

Few can be called such a leader of cranial couture like Treacy. His Rizzoli-published book, with a radiant Linda Evangelista on the cover, is a must for any fashion devotee. Even if you can’t afford one of his hats, you can purchase “Philip Treacy: Hat Designer” for $115 later this month.
