RYAN MCGINLEY’S WINTER
We all remember the Visionaire 61 Larger Than Life image of a girl launching herself from a beautiful fall colored tree. It is the epitome of a Ryan McGinley shot: a perfect human body placed in the subtle but mind-altering tones of mother nature. Now the celebrated photographer is back with a new exhibition at Team Gallery in the Lower East Side of New York City titled Winter.
At only 38, McGinley is one the world’s most acknowledged and respected photographers and is considered the go-to for many celebs; he’s “frozen” in time the likes of Kate Moss, Bill Murray, Lady Gaga, Liya Kebede, Jack Nicholson, Beyonce and many more. Not only does he master the art of fashion photography, but has also conquered the actual art world as he was one the youngest artists to ever have a solo exhibition at The Whitney Museum of American Art in 2003 (aged only 25).
Winter, as the title might suggest, is a series of photographs taken during a particularly excruciating winter in the state of New York. Naked bodies can be seen running through the winter landscapes naked. One photo features a girl with her back and bum so scratched up it seems as if she fell into a deep cave of ice picks. But the artist and his team invented and improvised manifold contrivances, employing the likes of ice-fishing tents, propane tanks and rock-climbing gear, in order to enable the production of these images and ensure everybody’s safety. The results are stunning and now we officially can’t wait for Winter to set back in.
Winter is open at Team Gallery November 5 – December 20, 2015.
