13. SEVEN DEADLY SINS
Issue 13 was approaching-and so was Christmas! We wanted something ''dark,'' something ''black,'' like Tim Burton's film The Nightmare Before Christmas. Seven Deadly Sins was designed as seven individual volumes, one per sin. The booklets were then housed in a slipcase, a format reminiscent of children's Bible books. This was the first time we got to print the work of Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, whom we had just met in Amsterdam. Their decadent style and ironic approach were perfect for the theme. We were surprised how the Sins seemed to bring out the best in artists who contributed to this issue. We almost wished there were more sins to go around. Mary Ellen Mark depicted Lust. Wrath featured the work of Mario Sorrenti and of the photojournalist James Nachtwey. Barbara Kruger and Jean-Philippe Delhomme both insisted on Greed, and Mario Testino's personal twist on Pride came in the form of photos taken from years of New York City Gay Pride parades.
