As Isetan, the renowned Japanese department store, celebrated its 120th anniversary, Visionaire planned an issue that encapsulated twelve decades of style. Ultimately, twelve portfolios by twelve fashion photographers and illustrators summed up the faces, fashions, and trends that made every decade from the 1880s to the 2000s. David Sims shot an ode to ’50s rockabilly; Steven Meisel compiled his most unforgettable images from the ’80s into one blockbuster collage; and in dedication to the ’70s, Mario Testino inserted old images of himself into vintage Gucci campaigns. Mats Gustafson chose the 1890s to realize a vision of Belle Époque fashion in his signature elegant watercolors. “This decade was interesting to me because it was a very dynamic time when it came to clothing,” the artist explains. “So I decided to realize it from a fashion point of view.” Meanwhile, the work of other artists ran closer to the emotional. Bruce Weber envisioned a wartime ’40s tale of Americana, inspired by his own true-life experience. As Weber recalls, “I stopped by a cemetery in a small town outside Charleston, where soldiers recently had been laid to rest, and it just kicked an idea into my head. When Stephen and Cecilia asked me to pick a decade, I chose the ’40s because it was a time when men and women entered into conflict with such bravery, and when they returned home they were welcomed as heroes.” Heroes, icons, legends, and inspirations — they were essential fragments of an issue for the ages.
